People are often taken aback when they see the cost of birth photography. Birth is one life’s biggest events (personally, I say it is literally life’s single BIGGEST event). What I’ve seen in my work as a nurse and midwife over the years, is how much people underestimate how momentous birth is.

Factors that go into pricing birth photography:

  1. Birth Photographers go on-call from 37 weeks until you give birth (that means being on call for up to 5 weeks). Being on-call requires a lot. When a client calls in labor, the photographer has to be able to stop whatever they’re doing, and go. That means arranging childcare, missing out on holidays, birthdays, events, etc. The rigors of on-call life make many photographers not want to or be able to photograph births. I know very well the stress of on-call life, from my many years working as a nurse and midwife. For this reason, I only accept a few birth clients each year.

  2. Length of time for birth varies greatly and can be incredibly long (24+ hours sometimes).

  3. Birth settings have some of the worst conditions for quality photography. Many photographers avoid births specifically for this reason.

  4. Equipment is expensive. Photographing in less than ideal settings, and especially low (or non-existent) lighting requires high quality equipment to ensure photos turn out beautifully.
